FR Review:
Principal Eli Rios specializes in the reconditioning of Great American and Regency English furniture in particular, but also of French and Italian antiques. We hear he shuns the word “refinish,” saying antiques are so delicate that to strip them down to refinish would devalue the piece. Instead, Rios relies on his 30-plus years of experience carving, replacing veneers, reconditioning and polishing antique furniture. He can also deliver appraisals, damage assessment, authentication and loss of value. Sources say Rios’ reproductions are indistinguishable from the originals, particularly his japanning skills, which have been featured by Martha Stewart.

Rios boasts an impressive resume. After training under a German restorer, he was the first employee hired by Sotheby’s restoration, heading that department for six years. He earned a conservator degree from Smithsonian University and continues to teach applied chemistry of historic materials at FIT, NYU, Parsons, The Cooper-Hewitt Museum and The Harvard Club. Rios also works with Hunter College, taking on student apprentices.

Rios established the company in 1989 and has seven full-time employees. The fi rm’s 10,000-square-foot workshop also serves as a storage space, gallery and classroom, where Rios opens the doors to the general public for gilding and French polishing lessons. On staff are gilders, French polishers, a japanner and carver with refined chairmaking skills, and a metalworker who does extensive Boulle work, lock-and-key repair and metal inlay. With so much talent around, it’s no surprise that quality is near the top of the pyramid.

Representative Client Comments:
