FR Review:
Praised for spotting the trends before they become trends, Thomas O’Brien creates distinctive, refined environments based on a modern aesthetic and saturated with neoclassical warmth. A master creator of mood, O’Brien studied architecture at the Cooper Union and then worked as the director of the Ralph Lauren Home Collection. At Aero, he has created his own comfortable modernism that fuses bold architectural furniture with serene backgrounds, shots of color and bargain finds. This look, which is the envy of his peers, is available at Aero’s SoHo retail store or through a variety of showrooms.

O’Brien wins accolades from supporters for being extremely loyal—he reportedly went to the “ends of the earth” to finish a project before a big wedding. His projects range from an apartment for Giorgio Armani to large-scale houses in Greenwich to major commercial undertakings (Donna Karan showrooms, a David Barton gym, the SoHo Grand Hotel). Satisfied clients testify that he is very involved in the initial design concept and then hands the projects over to strong project managers. These days, the firm has a strong focus on product design, and smaller design clients may not be the top priority.

The firm’s fees reflect its stature in the marketplace. Up-front charges are substantial, and products are generally offered at retail or above. Hourly fees are charged for oversight, varying considerably based on the seniority of the designer. Despite the chic, relaxed result, patrons say that well over half of the contents are custom made, from furniture and fittings to fabrics and carpets. Elle Decor A-List. AD 100 2018.

Representative Client Comments:
“Everyone looks to him for the next step.” “He was very good about integrating a modern design sensibility into my more traditional home. He would use chintz, but in a fresh way.” “Not only an amazing designer–an amazing person as well.” “He is extremely expensive, but you get the best.” “With new lines coming out all the time, he’s got a lot on his plate, but still puts a lot of care into the exciting projects.” “His rooms are modern, yet brushed with a nostalgic, silver-hued patina.” “Incredibly innovative work that’s not in the least bit trendy.” “He’s got a lot of products to worry about, but he doesn’t take jobs he can’t handle.” “Thomas’s designs, are both beautiful and functional.” “He often does an exaggerated Jean-Michel Frank in neutral shades, but can also do a more traditional look with unexpected pizzazz.” “I cannot decide which room I love the most.” “He can make a suburban Georgian manor house look hip and now.” “Aesthetic restraint with a passion.”

Project Description & Comments:
A wonderful firm that focuses more on products rather than individual residential clients these days. However, he takes good care of those lucky enough to be on his roster.
