FR Review:
Conversant in both Continental elegance and modern chic, Roger de Cabrol mixes it up to suit the interests of each client. Many projects begin with a traditional background, which de Cabrol accents with playful and elegant mid-century inspirations, yielding rooms that are contemporary and livable. His clients report that he can either take the lead or work closely with them, keeping priorities such as budgetary constraints and family at the forefront. A designer with a keen appreciation for the lives his clients live, de Cabrol is happy to use sturdier reproductions in place of fragile antiques.
Educated in France at L’E´cole des Roches and L’E´cole des Beaux Arts in Paris, de Cabrol has worked with such names as Baron Fred de Cabrol (his uncle), Valerian Rybar and Jacques Grange. He started his own firm in 1987, focusing mostly on Manhattan, though recent projects have taken him as far afield as Brazil. Clients very much enjoy the design process with de Cabrol, saying that he’s a charming conversationalist (in French, Spanish and English) and socially fluid, equally at home at a hipster cafe or on a yacht. We’re told that de Cabrol keeps his practice small to keep overhead low and focus on clients. He has been known to call repeatedly while on vacation to check up on items as small as a single doorknob.
The firm charges a standard design fee with a lower markup on product—or de Cabrol can work on a consultation basis at a reasonable hourly rate. He’ll take on a single room for a new client if the chemistry is right, and is known for fair pricing. Many clients hire him again and again, taking his services to the office, to the beach and to the country. They say that he is patient, honest, never pushy—and offers a unique and personal look.
Representative Client Comments:
“Roger’s scope is really remarkable. We did three projects with him: one French traditional, one contemporary and one modern. My friend did ultra-traditional with him.” “Roger was great about including our existing furnishings and artwork.” “His European background is evidenced in his biases regarding furnishings and fabric—not a lot of chintz here.” “Fantastic and very quick realization. Expensive but worth it.” “He is reachable all hours of the night and day.” “Great flexibility and always extremely courteous.” “Roger is totally willing and able to deal with the contractor and architect.” “He is an ideal decorator for people who are time-deprived.” “In an amazingly short three months and just three shopping trips with Roger, my apartment was on the cover of Architectural Digest.” “Roger came highly recommended to us, and now I see why.”
