FR Review:
Thierry Despont’s name is often spoken with awe. As the interior designer of Xanadu 2.0, (Bill Gates' $63 million house) and The Getty Center (the world’s richest museum) he is in a class by himself. Other notable projects include the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty, the Frick family mansion in Pittsburgh and the the flagship store for Harry Winston in Beverly Hills–appropriate assignments for one of the industry’s grandest practicioners.

Lauded for his interior design, Despont often takes on the architect’s role as well. He is recognized as one of the few architects or designers who can orchestrate the building of a gargantuan new home and make it look as if it had existed for generations. Classically inspired and stylishly forward-thinking, Despont is said to worship the work of Palladio. Rotundas are Despont’s favorite design element, which to him are “spaces with magic poetry.” Despont’s genius lies in his ability to make use of the most current technology to produce timeless masterpieces. His attention to detail is legendary, while his presentation skills are the stuff of lore. For Leslie Wexner’s review of the plans for his 64,000-square-foot Columbus, Ohio, home, Despont placed the large-scale model in a blackened room. Upon Wexner’s arrival, a simulated sun rose over the house, complete with mist and George Gershwin music.

While he maintains a residence in Paris, most of Despont’s time is spent in New York, where his firm was established in 1980. He studied design at L'E´cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and urban design and city planning at Harvard—then worked on the redesign of Tehran for the Shah of Iran. References call him extremely charming—dressing, speaking and decorating with the grandeur that only the French can summon with grace. We are told that he can decorate equally well in the English tradition and in contemporary styles. Patrons say that the net cost of the products and the corresponding fees of the firm are “inordinately” high, but for the most part, they continue to pay the bills happily. ID Hall of Fame. AD 100.
