FR Review:
With strong modern clarity, the designs of SPG resonate warmth and spirit. The look is highly unified and highly edited. But a generous use of natural materials in clean, flush planes enriches the space and adds thoughtful complexity. To SPG, traditional means maintaining the moldings and interfusing sleek linear cabinetry throughout. The result is a consistent "spatial experience" with a polished and joyful demeanor.

Founded by Caroline "Coty" Sidnam and currently directed by Eric Gartner, SPG is an award winning design practice that also provides a comprehensive range of architecture and design services. Sidnam was an undergraduate at both Kenyon and Sarah Lawrence, and received her architecture degree from Cooper Union. Gartner received both his B.S. and M.Arch. from the University of Virginia. The practice employs twelve architects who collectively draw inspiration from the rapport they develop with clients. Clients speak of an easy manner and strong creativity at both the staff and principal level. Residential projects make up about a third of the firm's "state-of-the-art" work, which includes the renovation and construction of many co-op and condominium apartments, urban townhouses, and second homes. SPG's projects span from coast to coast and have the firm traveling internationally as well.

The firm has also cultivated an impressive commercial and retail roster which includes AOL's Manhattan corporate offices, Polo Sport's prototype Madison Avenue flagship, and the Hartmann luggage store, among others. This new-wave commercial/retail work clearly informs the firm's residential compositions and offers a strong level of budgeting and timeliness. Fees are slightly under the standard range.

Representative Client Comments:
"The best architectural team--they ensured a truly fun and successful experience." "The whole crew is professional, smart, fresh, creative, talented, sensible, thoughtful, thorough, honest, and just a group of solid citizens--people we really liked." "Attention to us and the project was unwavering." "Very complete drawings with no surprises. Thus, the contractor stayed on target." "Strong personalities that you would have to click with." "They kept us on budget, even when we thought about straying." "Their contractor contacts were excellent---we rave them as much as we do the architect." "The end result looked just like the drawings." "Like working with good friends." "Everyone is terrific including Paisley who is always there to manage the office details." "We'll never have to search for an architecture team again--they're keepers." "Operationally, Eric Gartner's manner couldn't be more sensitive; his creativity only grows when confronted with a challenge by owner desire or structural issue; his personal supervision is highly respected, not only by the owner, but as importantly, by the contractors and subcontractors that do the construction." "Having chosen a New York based architect to work on a project some 2500 miles away turned out to be a terrific idea." "They were thorough in presenting different solutions to different problems in the search for quality, cost-effectiveness, and cohesiveness. I recommend them wholeheartedly."

Project Description & Comments:
I begin with the highest compliments for my threshold issue: user compatibility. The home which SPG created for me in Leicester, North Carolina was designed to exactly how I spend my full days. I spend most of my time in my home, working, living, entertaining, exercising, and relaxing. Matching the functionality with the design to create an outstanding space that enhances every moment spent in the house is something I doubted was possible. After three years, the beauty of the house, the quality of its construction, and its suitability for me have deteriorated not one iota.

Operationally, Eric Gartner's manner couldn't be more sensitive; his creativity only grows when confronted with a challenge by owner desire or structural issue; his rates are fare; contracts and financial matters managed completely professionally and on time. His personal supervision is highly respected, not only by the owner, but as importantly, by the contractors and subcontractors that do the construction -- resulting in an incredibly clean and organized work environment. When the professionals working on the house work hard to please the architect, the result is the highest quality work. The ultimate punch list was minimal.

I would retain SPG again in a heartbeat and recommend him unequivocally.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Project Description & Comments:
We were about to build a house in the northern Rockies that would serve as a ski and summer home. SPG was one of a number of firms we interiviewed, but their presentation, their portfolio and the satisfaction of prior clients was convincing.

Having chosen a New York based architect to work on a project some 2500 miles away turned out to be a terrific idea. It allowed us to work closely with the architect, to a have a really fruitful exchange of ideas, and in the scheme of things, the architect's trips to the work site were quite inexpensive.

The project was brilliantly executed: schematically excellent, intelligently devised, beautifully rendered. It turned out to be a masterpiece. But it is a masterpiece brought in on time and on budget, and one that was so well planned that there were no change orders that affected the cost of the house. SPG's attention to us and our project was unwavering.

SPG was extremely mindful of the budget and would hold us in line when we sought to stray with an expensive finish, or handle, etc., and came up with interesting, practical and beautiful solutions that all fit within budget. Some of those answers still get comments from visitors about how beautiful and smart that finish or that treatment is.

Project Description & Comments:
My project was the gut renovation of a large Manhattan townhouse. Over the course of the project I worked closely with both principals at the firm, Coty and Eric, as well as with several of their excellent junior staff.

You can see the quality of their finished work from their photographs more readily than from any description I could give here. What I would add is that even jaded New York design and trade professionals have repeatedly commented to me that the house is in the very top tier for design and construction quality. SPG balanced my desire for a dramatic modern aesthetic and integrated artistic elements without neglecting any of the mundane practicalities so easy to overlook as a layman. They were thorough in presenting different solutions to different problems in the search for quality, cost-effectiveness, and cohesiveness.

What can’t be seen in any photographs is the working relationship. SPG was very responsive to my requests and they had an excellent relationship with my general contractor. From a project management perspective, I saw firsthand how the GC would encounter the inevitable issues during construction which require an alteration to the original plans. SPG understood and followed my parameters for when they should approve alterations without my input, and when they should bring something to my attention before proceeding. On top of that, the infamous NYC Department of Buildings requires relentless project management to abide by their requirements and to pass inspection. SPG also coordinated those demands seamlessly.

Finding the right GC is obviously just as critical as the right architect. SPG has long-standing relationships with some of the best GC’s in the New York area and they introduced me to the firm that I ultimately hired… something to keep in mind if you have a local job.

The bottom line is that I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Project Description & Comments:
Working with Coty and the team at SPG is what allowed us to realize our vision in a recent apartment renovation. They helped us create a space which is light, beautiful and functional.

Coty came to the project with a clear design perspective on how to renovate our living space which appealed to us greatly. Working from this starting point, we spent considerable time talking through choices to insure that the design incorporated our inputs and met our needs. Living in the space now, we appreciate the importance of the time and attention that went into this careful and collaborative design.
Through the construction process it was a pleasure to work with a superb contractor. Both the contractor and SPG paid attention to getting the details done right and to managing costs effectively. When problems arose the team at SPG were responsive and stayed focused throughout the project. They continued to provide valuable support as we moved on to interior design.

In all, a process we had expected to stressful turned into a positive experience. And living with the results, we feel that the renovation turned out even better than we had hoped. We are extremely happy that we chose SPG.
