FR Review:
This studio furniture maker has run his own small shop since the 70s and is regarded as “outstanding in every respect.” James Schriber builds for designers and designs for clients in a contemporary aesthetic. Inspired by forward-looking French and Scandinavian designs of the 30s, 40s and 50s, Schriber leaves the country woodworking to others. Instead, he focuses on freestanding pieces and large-scale architectural millwork.
Schriber has a background in furniture design and trained at Boston University. Sources describe this “meticulous” craftsman as “a good businessman.” Schriber works most often in New York City and Westchester and Fairfield counties. There is no minimum cost, and we hear there’s no limit to the understanding Schriber has with his clients. Full rooms range from $10,000-100,000 while single pieces run from $8,000-30,000. We hear his small three-man shop is patient and reliable. The firm outsources its finish work. Quality is superb and costs are consistent with those of the firm’s high-end peers. Schriber’s work has been featured in trade magazines like Woodwork Magazine and American Craft Magazine.
Representative Client Comments:
“An artist’s sensibility and core. A dear to work with.” “It is extraordinary to have a furniture maker with a full design vocabulary, a brilliant command of materials and details and the willingness to apply himself to millwork and architectural installation. He is a pleasure to work with in every way.” “My family and I have worked with him for years—and we would only recommend him with the highest praise and enthusiasm. His clients are fortunate indeed.” “I recommend him 110 percent.”
