FR Review:
Whether he’s doing high-voltage Art Deco glamour or Neoclassical with panache, James Rixner creates interiors radiate warmth and verve. Known for a detailed look that draws on clients’ personalities, Rixner often takes a project management role. Unafraid of labels, Rixner will do contemporary, maxed-out traditional, or a blend of the two with purpose. In all cases, the look is strong rooms where every chair has a personality and the drapes get noticed. Given his background in architectural planning, clients are comfortable when Rixner takes a space back to its skeletal bones and reconstitutes with flair. Recent projects have seen him incorporate rich materials–wood, marble, stone and lush fabrics are now part of the mix.

Rixner received a master’s in urban planning from the University of Pittsburgh before coming to New York and working for Harry Hinson in interiors. After working at Bloomingdale’s and for the architectural firm HLW, Rixner went out on his own in 1983. Currently there is a “youthful, enthusiastic” staff of five, including principal associate Catarine Wright. Recent projects include a floor-through Deco loft, a contemporary Manhattan penthouse and–on the other side of the coin–a large “grand traditional” project in Atlanta and a Regency-inspired Grand Salon in New Jersey. Rixner also planned the wedding of a client’s son—a testament to his close relationships with clients, who come to rely on his calm, expertise, and good cheer. A proponent of using technology and social media in his work, en route between job sites he can often be found texting pictures back and forth with clients for inspiration.

The firm will take on projects of any size for the right client, from “two pillows up to an estate.” There is a standard flat design fee, and good-value markups on product. Clients laud the excellent up-front presentations, including floor plans, elevations, and lighting schemes. They back Rixner as a “pleasant person who has proven that he can get the job done.” ASID.

Representative Client Comments:
“What used to be a plain white wall now has the most amazing glow—the painters took six months but it was clearly worth it.” “James was great about following my lead if I pointed him in a direction—no ego issues.” “Clearly a preference for high-end materials.” “James doesn’t just think about color and fabric, he really rethinks the space.” “My bedroom is truly amazing in shades of gold, silver and black. I never could have pulled that off alone.” “Can get unique materials and results that no one else can.” “Wildly different looks from one house to the next. His ability to do different styles is admirable.” “A little below the radar, he doesn’t have an attitude and always does a nice job.” “Jim is great about trying to steer us in the direction of reasonably priced antiques. We did not listen, but that was not his doing.” “When the electricians tore up my brand new mahogany library, Jim had it all restored at no cost to me.” “You pay for the best and get it with Jim.”
