Dexterously weaving together graceful lines, well-loved objects and sun-baked colors, Sara Bengur creates a compelling tapestry for her clients. Drawing upon her Turkish heritage and the influence of a well-stamped passport, Bengur employs worldly touches to enhance classically refined interiors (no easy all-around toile here). The overall effect is a finely tuned balance between beauty, interest and comfort—polished brass lamps reflect the subtle cream tones of the decorative painting, while dappled sunlight falling on an antique rug completes the picture.
The daughter of an IMF banker who spent her formative years in Turkey and Europe, Bengur grew up a citizen of the world. After working on Wall Street for a few years, she studied at Parsons, then began her design career working on large projects for Stephen Sills. Developing her unique style, she opened up shop in 1992. Recent projects include homes in Manhattan, the Hamptons, Maine and the French West Indies. Clients relish the collaborative nature of working with Bengur, saying that the relationship becomes a lively intellectual dialog (one laughingly mentioned a lamp that she and Bengur had dubbed “the Louise Bourgeois piece”).
Clients praise Bengur’s attention to detail, her intelligence and warmth of spirit, and the complete effort she puts into her work. Entire homes are usually undertaken, though sometimes one room is a prelude to bigger things. The firm generally charges a standard percentage over net on products and hourly fees for oversight and design. For design that is fresh, lovely and culturally engaged, clients take delight in working with Bengur.
