Known for his distinct Francophile design leanings, exacting details and imaginative whimsy, Etienne Coffinier has a loyal New York client base. Coffinier practiced architecture and interior design in France for seventeen years before crossing the pond in 1998. With an artistic vision to bring the elegance and skills of Continental craft to the United States, Coffinier bases his designs on classical motifs, refining them with a modern flourish. Given Coffinier’s architectural background and the business skills of his partner, Ed Ku, the firm takes a holistic approach, assuming ownership for all design details, including doors, lighting, room configurations and the hiring of the contractor. Clients report that they are both relieved and impressed.
Coffinier was educated in Rouen and Lille, where he received an M. Arch. In France, he worked for numerous heads of state and Middle Eastern royalty. Ku, responsible for the day-to-day management of client projects, has an MBA from Columbia and fifteen years of experience in marketing for diverse businesses, from Crest toothpaste to Broadway musicals. Since 1998, the firm has concentrated on residential work, with forays into hospitality–they’ve won a number of awards for restaurant designs.
New clients range from those refurbishing a bathroom to major home renovations. Clients are billed monthly, with hourly rates for all the design and shopping time of Coffinier, and low product commissions. Coffinier is said to use a wide range of sources, depending upon the client’s interests. As a result, living room costs may vary greatly, from $50,000 to $500,000. Etienne Coffinier is an International Associate of AIA, DPLG, and ASID. Coffinier Ku Design has been named one of New York Spaces Top 50 Designers. KB 2003, 2007, 2010, 2012.
