FR Review:
Extolled for his personal style and stylish interiors, Russell Bush can completely transform a space or “magically weave a new facade” into an existing framework. While known for his refined, essential layouts featuring spare, astute antiques, and tailored, detailed upholstery, Bush works really hard to reflect the personality and taste of the owner—so much so that clients often hand him their keys and walk away, knowing that they will love the results. A self-described “camouflage decorator,” Bush can do a Zen makeover or a Bijou alteration with both parties claiming him to be an interior artist. Bush reportedly thinks of the process as a spiritual exercise with the ultimate goal being client satisfaction.
Bush entered the design world via fashion, working at the Costume Institute under Diana Vreeland for seven shows. After taking classes at the New School and Parsons, Bush did interiors for Peter Marino for ten years, becoming the head of the interiors department. In 1997, Bush started his own boutique firm, now with four on staff.
Whether it’s providing museum-quality decor or quickly assembling a becoming guest room from Crate & Barrel—clients say that Bush is naturally talented and handles himself in a most professional manner. Budgets usually evolve throughout the course of the project and are always dictated by the client. The firm takes on about three projects at a time (with small touchups ongoing) and charges standard hourly fees and lower product markups.
Representative Client Comments:
“So organized, professional and gentlemanly.” “He respects any budget and always remains calm—both such rarities in this business.” “He did a five-story townhouse renovation for me and extensive work for a friend of mine with very different taste, and both are entirely true to the spirit and style of each of us.” “It’s a stretch for him to juggle all his projects at once, but he manages it.” “Will never foist you off on an assistant. Very hands-on.” “He never imposes his taste, but gently guides you to the perfect solution.” “He’s not too precious to use 'low' when it works and will add some interest to a room.” “I appreciate his extraordinary talent and his intellectual mind. We discuss the historic perspective of it all: furniture, fashion, people.”
