Clients say they are drawn to this firm's simplistic, minimalist spaces and modern aesthetic. We are told the firm maximizes existing natural light and open space while incorporating innovative materials such as plastics, resin, concrete, metals, and bamboo. Clients say they appreciate the clean flow of Desai/Chia spaces and the controlled manner in which the cutting-edge materials are presented. The firm takes on a variety of project types, but is probably best known for its elegant loft renovations with a maximum of reflected light with Eastern influences. Desai/Chia also does apartment renovations, additions, and smaller new construction projects. The firm generally handles mid-sized renovations, but has also completed larger multi-million-dollar projects.
This small firm of three opened its doors in 1996. Principals are Arjun Desai, who holds degrees from MIT and Bennington College, and Katherine Chia, who has degrees from Amherst College and MIT and previously worked with Maya Lin. The firm designs between ten and fifteen projects each year, the vast majority of which are in Manhattan and are residential in nature. The firm charges an hourly rate not to exceed the standard percentage of overall construction costs.
