FR Review:
This European master of decorative painting is said to be a “Renaissance artist living in the 21st century.” Eva Karsai’s faux finishes have clients’ houseguests believing their marble columns are authentic and their Venetian wallpaper is original. Eva also works with stained glass and has been commissioned for several notable synagogues and churches. It is rare to fi nd a painter who invites the input of others, yet for Eva, this is part of the artistic process; sources say they enjoy having her in their homes just as much as her art. Clean, quick and accountable, Eva is relied on by repeat clients and their referrals, some for decades.
Eva taught high school art and attended the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before moving to New York and eventually establishing her own business in 1993. At first, in exchange for professional exposure, she volunteered as a painter for Fresco; her dues paid off when a contractor recognized her work at a Hungarian Embassy exhibit and offered her a spot on a Park Avenue renovation, jumpstarting her career.
No location is too far and no project too small for Eva—even a piece of furniture— but she prefers entire rooms and completes most of her work around the greater New York City region. For basic glazing, rates start at $600 a day—with an additional $300 for an assistant—and $1,200 for a project. While her prep work, in terms of sketching each painting, is meticulous, she requests that all priming and skim coating is complete prior to her arrival. Though her pricing is just above middle of the road, few clients recall the final bill, fixated more on the artwork than the number.
