FR Review:
Playing off the relationship between textures and patterns, Brian Murphy creates dynamic interiors that have a contemporary American flair. Classic fabrics bring to mind images of apple-pie picnics, and rustic wood paneling juxtaposed with crystal chandeliers evoke luxury in the countryside. Clear, bold colors stand out against more subdued patterns, which generates an exciting and rare energy in Murphy’s designs. While he is best known for what he describes as, “classical style with antiques,” Murphy is also influenced by a practicality that makes his rooms joyfully livable.

In 1987, Brian Murphy started his decorating career at Parish-Hadley Associates, where he worked until he started his own firm in 2000. Murphy’s firm has a national scope, but notable projects include homes in New York, Lake Tahoe, Martha’s Vineyard, Nashville and Miami. The company has an impressive list of clients, which includes Al and Tipper Gore, Mike Nichols and Diane Sawyer, and Ambassador Henry Grunwald.

Brian Murphy Inc. has a small staff, and clients always get Murphy’s full attention, as he is the only designer at the firm. Typical projects are gut renovations, and his minimum budget is $250,000 for a project. He charges a low-to-average markup over net purchases, average markup on antiques and contractor charges, and a high charge per day if the project is outside of the New York Area. Murphy is not necessarily a bargain, but for a world-class decorator who brings a fresh perspective, clients feel it’s definitely worth the cost.

Representative Client Comments:
"Approachable despite his fame." "Hugely popular with high-profile clients." "A very well-run office."
