FR Review:
At once a classicist and a modernist, John Barman is known for his clear-cut, sophisticated style and new ideas with a strong point of view. He favors handsome, crisp lines, new uses for traditional materials, and the successful marriage of functionality and fine detailing. In recent years, he’s honed the aesthetic into something cleaner–neutrals serve as a background for mid-century modern furniture and pops of color. Very much a collaborator, he enjoys working with clients who are engaged in the design process, leading to a finished result that is both sophisticated and highly personal.
Barman’s firm, founded more than twenty years ago, comprises six employees, including longtime key associate Kelly Graham. Six to eight projects run concurrently, most of them larger. Barman’s budgets and status reports are “first class”–detailed, on time and very useful. Clients enjoy working with him, saying he is “serious about his craft” and will always provide a thorough and erudite explanation for his decisions. They also highlight his diligence, saying “nothing slips through the cracks.”
Barman conducts the majority of his business in Manhattan and the Hamptons, with a satellite office in Miami. The firm charges standard design fees and standard markups on product. Budgets can be set or evolve, but Barman is trusted by clients to stay sensible.
