There is a refined, sophisticated, fluidity in the original work of Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown, known for their "masculine modernism." Since 1985, these partners have enhanced the subtleties of surfaces, textures, and light, often with oblique lines of worldliness and form. With a holistic view, they are as much about the color (often neutrals tending toward earthiness) and the furnishings as the architecture. The partnership's major commissions are global and range from the planning, architecture, and interior architecture of large public/private civic and residential developments, to the interior architecture and exhibition design of museums, to, of course, house and apartment interiors. Notable projects include Singapore's Suntec City, the Jianfu Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City, and the William Beaver House and Riverlofts in New York City. Beyond merely designing furniture, the firm ventures into the creation of gas fireplaces, sinks, bathtubs, dinnerware, candlesticks, and picture frames.
The firm's diversity of projects builds on the duo's expertise creating technologically advanced spaces, while showing off its excellent attention to detail.
