FR Review:
William Sofield confidently and uniquely stimulates the senses with interiors that look hip, glamorous and slightly decadent all at once. Columns with gilded fluting, floating ceilings, polished concrete floors, and a maximization of the natural lighting are signature elements. Sofield is best known for his interior design of the SoHo Grand Hotel and many other boutique hotels, the worldwide redesign of the Gucci, Boucheron and Yves Saint Laurent stores, and the executive offices for Disney. Equally comfortable with young and old, he reportedly is just as happy working on the first apartment for young newlyweds as he is for the most esteemed clients. But for all, it is understood that every detail must be precisely designed and executed.
Sofield graduated from Princeton with a degree in architecture, urban planning, and European cultural studies. After receiving a Whitney Museum fellowship, he apprenticed with a variety of architectural firms and craftsmen, forming his own practice in 1989. In 1992, he co-founded Aero Studios, and in 1996 launched Sofield Studios with a strong interdisciplinary approach. Known for its original looks that redefine the structural underpinnings and combine historical and modern materials, the studio’s work is an intellectually stimulating take on luxury. The firm takes on a wide variety of residential projects, ranging from metropolitan apartments to expansive estates with extensive landscaping, including Ralph Lauren’s personal residences.
