David Piscukas and Juergen Riehm are recognized for their distinctive and refined modernistic yet humanistic approach. With an open yet disciplined richness of texture, color and light, this duo usually incorporates undisguised humble and rugged materials (such as wood, stone and resin) to counterbalance contemporary lines. Their signature "modern contemporary expression" has garnered much praise in the press and among peers. Clients call the firm's handsome interiors inviting and elegant.
About half of 1100 Architect's twenty to twenty-five yearly projects are residential, which are evenly split between gut renovations and new construction. Clients applaud the firm for acknowledging the fact that real people must live and work comfortably, and that the designs "belong to the owners, not to the architects." 1100 Architects generally takes on substantial projects in Manhattan, but also works in the Hamptons, plus Westchester and Fairfield counties. Clients include noted retail establishments and institutions like TSE Cashmere, J. Crew, Rene Lezard, Shiseido, the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation and academic institutions as diverse as Little Red Schoolhouse, Brooklyn Friends School and the University of Pennsylvania. David Piscuskas received a B.A. from Brown, studied at RISD and received an M.Arch. from the University of California. Juergen Riehm received a degree in architecture from Fachhochschule Rheinland-Pfalz. The two worked together with Walter Chatham from 1983 to 1986 before launching their own venture. Sources say they appreciate the duo's constant architectural exploration in every project, which renders each space unique and forward-thinking. They are also appreciated for their own innovative interior design with coordinating cabinetry and accessories; however, they have worked with interior designers quite successfully, too. A standard percentage of total construction costs is charged, with smaller projects commanding a slightly higher percentage. Both Piscuskas and Riehm have been named AIA Fellows. AD100 2014.
