FR Review:
This mid-sized auction house enjoys the double distinction of being a third generation family-owned business and the largest rare book auctioneer in the world. Swann Galleries began in 1941, specializing in rare books, maps, atlases and manuscripts. Today, the company also sells posters, photographs, prints and drawings.

Appraisal services are usually undertaken only for large collections, in connection with items to be auctioned by Swann Galleries. However, if they have time, the staff of fifteen experts will take a look at whatever you can show them, for any purpose. The hourly fee is expensive, so think twice before bringing in all your stoop sale “treasures,” but we hear that the smaller size of this firm often leads to more focused expertise and personal attention. A low buyer’s premium is also considered a major plus.

Representative Client Comments:
“Interesting, innovative auctioning.” “They really bring in the niche collectors. That can be good or bad, depending on what you’re selling.” “They have a very professional staff, but they won’t turn their noses up at you.”
