FR Review:
Using native flora and practical design, Gunn Landscape Architecture lures its clients out of the house and into the simple pleasures of the great outdoors. More than just a pretty picture through the window, Gunn’s work is designed for those who intend to actually spend time in their space, whatever size it may be. The outcome is a true reflection of the client’s lifestyle, whether that’s frequent recreation under the sun, evening entertainment, or just quiet, stolen moments alone. With a sensitivity towards sustainability, Gunn projects are inspired by the local climate and landscape, reimagined in a more elegant and manicured layout. Above all, Gunn prioritizes space optimization, transforming the land in a way that makes sense without being too busy - natural without looking unkempt.
Principal Alec Gunn’s roots run deep in rural Maine, where he first fell in love with nature. His interests in horticulture and urban planning led to a masters in landscape architecture from Cornell, and then a position under Edwina von Gal. Gunn opened his own firm in 2000 with offices in Manhattan and the Hamptons, where the majority of projects take place. However, Gunn and his team of twelve will follow their clients to any landscape, anywhere. Since it keeps busy with 24-30 projects at a time, the firm works best with clients who are both flexible and experienced in renovations. Gunn's design fee structure varies with each project, with construction budgets ranging from $50,000 to a couple million; sources tell us billing is fair, honest, and prompt. While personally Gunn loves to work in the landscape-centric homes of Connecticut and the Hamptons - including a seven acre Gold LEED-certified compound in Bridgehampton - he also enjoys the challenge of a city terrace, where every inch counts.
Representative Client Comments:
"Really wonderful job on my Hamptons home, very design sensitive." "Alec has a very matter-of-fact approach to work, very observant and considerate of the condition at hand. For a Kips Bay show house we had to call him in last minute when another firm failed to deliver. Rather than dwell on the drama of the situation, he just looked at it as 'this is what needs to be done, and now.' The results were as if he'd been assigned the job the whole time." "Owns his work completely." "Our former landscape architect had very impractical ideas for our new home. Our interior designer recommended Alec - he was able to grasp both the drawbacks and opportunities of the space, all while factoring in what we dreamt of accomplishing." "Gunn was able to pull off two completely different but equally beautiful experiences - a backyard with lots of moss and grass, and then a chic roof deck lounge with furniture and planters." "Billing was honest, easy, and quick throughout the project. In fact we just called the other day for a copy of an invoice and received it within ten minutes!" "The price is fair for the work, though I know a few friends of mine who wouldn't be able to afford it." "Gunn is my go-to." "The maintenance is great, they are totally on top of it."
