FR Review:
Having designed the Giorgio Armani Center in Milan, the Nicole Farhi flagship store in New York and Jil Sander boutiques worldwide, Michael Gabellini is known for his links to the fashion world, art galleries and museums. Highly respected and admired for its modern, minimalist style of design, this firm is lauded by clients for finding new ways to interpret the modern aesthetic. Sources tell us the firm approaches each project with meticulous planning in order to create spacious, elegant designs that implement the importance of natural light through simple means. New Yorkers (and tourists worldwide) have seen his work in the redesign of Rockefeller Center's Fifth Avenue facade.
Created in 1991, the firm employs a staff of 31, led by principals Michael Gabellini, Daniel Garbowit, and Kimberly Sheppard, all graduates of RISD. The group takes on anywhere from twelve to twenty-four projects each year. Insiders describe Gabellini as an artist who works in architectural materials--in fact, he initially enrolled at RISD to become a sculptor, and segued to architecture. The firm focuses primarily on large, high-end jobs, accepting few smaller projects. The residential practice constitutes only ten to twenty percent of its portfolio, mostly gut apartment renovations featuring unique forms: abundant glass shoji screens, sliding and pivoting walls, edgy metal, and concrete moldings. Most are monochromatic, and many are for fashion insiders.
Much of the residential work is in Manhattan: Chelsea, Midtown, and the Upper East Side. The firm generally works on a fixed fee, comparable to a slightly higher than standard percentage of total construction costs. Gabellini AIA Fellow 2004. ID Hall of Fame.
