FR Review:
Thom Filicia made a name for himself as the “design doctor” from the acclaimed TV show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but he has also had a long-running career as a noted interior designer. Filicia’s designs are accessible and practical, often featuring clean lines and flashes of bright color that pop and add definition to a room. He frequently juxtaposes the circular with the rectangular: a round table with a plaid rug, a spherical sconce against lined wallpaper. His highly livable designs are modern and comfortable, yet classic enough to appeal to traditionalists. Overall, projects feel layered and collected, giving the space a sense of personality and soul.

Filicia received a BFA in Interior Design from Syracuse University before going on to prestigious design houses Parish-Hadley, Inc., Robert Metzger Interiors, and Bilhuber & Associates. In 1998, he started his own firm, Thom Filicia Inc. His client roster is diverse, and includes many entertainment luminaries (including Jennifer Lopez and Tina Fey). Much of Filicia’s residential work has been in New York City, most recently within the esteemed eco-luxurious (LEED certified) Riverhouse, but his company also has an international scope. Notable commercial work includes the VIP Suite for the U.S. Pavillion at the 2005 World’s Fair in Japan, the interiors and pool areas in the W Hotel chain, and outdoor lounges for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta and New York City.

He has written two books on design, 2008’s Thom Filicia Style and 2012’s American Beauty: Renovating & Decorating a Beloved Retreat, and co-authored Queer Eye For The Straight Guy: The Fab 5 Guide To Living Better. Filicia previously hosted the Style Network’s makeover programs Dress My Nest and Tacky House, and is a recurring talent on the HGTV Network. His product line, Thom Filicia Home Collection, features collaborations that include furniture with Vanguard, fabric with Kravet, artwork with Soicher Marin, rugs with Safavieh, broadloom with Shaw and curtain hardware with Classical Elements. These products, in addition to a personally curated collection and antique pieces, can be found in Filicia’s to-the-trade showroom, Sedgwick & Brattle, in the New York Design Center. Given how busy he is with a television career, books, and other media, it may be difficult to get in touch with Filicia himself, but if you are able to and can afford it, his designs bring a modern, hip warmth–not to mention celebrity status–to any home. KB 2004, 2006, 2012, and 2015. Elle Decor A-list, 2011-2016.

Representative Client Comments:
“A well-known name with a host of capable associates helping to run the show.” “Thom captures the essence of America in design and it’s beautiful, well made, and accessible.” “Some people probably think interior designers come in and impose a vision on people, but Thom never does that. He always organizes his creativity around the things that his clients love.” “His pieces are so beautiful but so livable. The thing about Thom is that he takes the idea of design and style and having things be beautiful and he makes it a thing that’s not ‘snobby.’ It’s just something that makes your life better.” “His colors are always fresh, different, unexpected. He doesn’t follow trends so much as he creates them.” “[With clients] the relationship is crucial and I can see people just immediately clicking with Thom, not just because of the beauty in his design sense or the way he listens to people, but his humor, which is a linchpin of his life.” “He has a real wizardry of making it all work.”
