FR Review:
Greta Weil and Barbara Friedman devote their practice entirely to residential design, creating a "classic, fresh look" that clients say is never overdone. We hear Weil Friedman studies every aspect of living in a space from the perspective of the client and integrates these discoveries into architecture. Not surprisingly, sources find the firm very practical about and responsive to "real-life" issues. Clients also appreciate the low-key style these architects use to guide them through the design process, while industry professionals acknowledge the excellence of the firm's drawings and project management. All these attributes contribute to keeping the jobs running smoothly.

This firm is appreciated for its accommodating perspective. We hear the principals are "articulate" and share "a great sense of humor," making the process "fun." After gaining experience at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, these two joined forces to tackle mainly complete renovations of city residences and significant additions and renovations of client's second houses outside the city. Balancing their own families with work, the principals have an "excellent view of the realities of family life." Projects on which these two talented women are currently working include a gut renovation on the Upper East Side and a villa in Dubai.

Weil and Friedman often have as much work as they can reasonably handle, so supporters encourage new prospective clients to be patient. While dependent upon the scope of a project, Weil Friedman typically charges a standard percentage of construction for its services, which often includes doing the interiors as well.

Representative Client Comments:
"I can't imagine any firm producing a higher quality product than Weil Friedman." "They really get that clean, rich, comfortable look." "Very creative design solutions." "Kept [the contractor] on their toes, and made sure that every hinge was placed correctly, every tile was flush and honed, and every piece of cabinetry in the kitchen lined up." "Thorough, conscientious, and hardworking above and beyond the call of duty." "Preserved the original lines of the saltbox in our Hamptons house while still achieving the objective." "Attentive project management and oversight, and also budget-conscious." "Equally talented with interior design and architecture--great to work with one team." "They manage projects well, even from a distance, and are very proactive about problem solving when things do crop up." "On time, on budget, and beyond my expectations." "We thank the day they were recommended to us." "WFA oversaw the construction phase with commensurate care and diligence and the project came in on time and on budget. The contractor stated that the project ran so smoothly due to the quality, completeness and accuracy of the architect’s drawings and specifications, which he deemed to be the best he had ever seen."

Project Description & Comments:
I employed Weil Friedman Architects (“WFA”) to renovate a studio apartment in the Upper East Side of Manhattan that I had purchased as an investment property. The apartment had not been renovated since the 1930’s and required a complete overhaul. While a generic upgrade might have, in and of itself, resulted in a much more valuable property, I was interested in completing a cutting-edge, stylish renovation that would have a clean and modern perspective. I worked very closely with the Principals of WFA, Greta Weil and Barbara Friedman, on the design phase and was very pleased that they shared my vision of what could be done to totally transform this small but cozy space. Their design was brilliant.

WFA oversaw the construction phase with commensurate care and diligence and the project came in on time and on budget. The Contractor stated that the project ran so smoothly due to the quality, completeness and accuracy of the architect’s drawings and specifications, which he deemed to be the best he had ever seen.

The quality of their work was of the highest caliber. While I have worked on larger and more complex projects, I would rank the Principals at WFA to be the best of the architectural professionals with whom I have ever worked. It was a privilege to partner with such seasoned, well-trained architects on a relatively minor project. The Principals’ willingness to take on my smallish project was testimony to their love of their professional craft.

Project Description & Comments:
Everyone comes into both houses they did asking who did the work and how simply beautiful and elegant (not showy) the places look. Barbara in particular will go to great length to get exactly the right material for a job and she pays close attention to cost - shops around. She was also very good with the contractors who are often too happy to cut a corner. She managed to get them to do the right thing without them resenting having to do it (or re-do it for that matter).
