Heralded for her renovation of the Neue Galerie, Annabelle Selldorf is recognized for her skill in "designing for art." Her minimalist-modern designs get maximum exposure in loft-like downtown galleries and modern residential spaces. We're told Selldorf focuses on simplicity and function. Sleek and uncluttered spaces gain levity from the proportion, warmth of materials and openness she considers to be the core of each design. Clients comment on her careful use of white and muted colors, her respect for detail and the intelligence of her work. Her straightforward, no-frills, unpretentious manner is as evident in her designs as her approach. She also can successfully mix modern and traditional elements.
Born in Germany to a family of architects, Selldorf continues to work in Venice, Zurich and London, as well as in New York. The architect attended Pratt and gained valuable on-the-job experience working for a general contractor. The office of 25, including 19 architects, is said to be quite helpful. While most projects are quite high end, often with excellent art integrally involved, smaller apartments of 2,000 square feet are also taken on regularly. We hear this inspired architect makes the completion of complex projects timely and efficient. Not known for the tightest drawings in the city, references report that she is nonetheless "quick to solve a problem." The firm charges a standard percentage of the construction cost. Selldorf recently introduced a line of furniture with tailored proportions, Vica, which is manufactured in the factory founded by her grandmother in Cologne.
