FR Review:
Building upon an innate design sensitivity, Alexa Hampton blends a freshness of line with a wealth of historical reference. Having assumed the reins of the family firm in 1998, she has become a star in her own right, beloved by clients for her “attention to detail, professional demeanor and charming personality.” Hampton’s spirited approach reflects a deep understanding of the past combined with an ability to adapt it just so–a pastiche of the finest Chippendale antique is intermingled with the likes of Jean-Michel Frank. In the country, there is a nod to contextual suitability, but “it is very much a catered affair” with the same ultimate resources being trucked in.
At age thirteen, Hampton began working in her father Mark Hampton’s office, developing what clients say are well-honed design instincts. Later, she graduated from Brown and studied at the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Hampton’s versatile capabilities are reflected in her recent projects. These include a new Louis XIV-style home in Atlanta, a Balinese-style Florida retreat, a formal Anglo-French home, a traditional boat with modern backgrounds and several New York apartments, ranging from modern eclectic to streamlined traditional. Clients say that the common thread is a desire to steer the project to the absolute highest standards, and a substantial budget. To the delight of clients and the detriment of the schedule, delegation is not Hampton’s preference, and there are usually about five large and twenty smaller ongoing projects.
The firm works with a fairly high design fee (but this includes oversight services and auction consultations) and classic retail on products. Hampton is known to mix it up to meet budgets—De Angelis for the living room and Classic Sofa for the playroom (with some unique tweaks). While most projects are large (living rooms in the $200,000 range), the firm is happy to work on smaller assignments. AD 100 2019, Elle Decor A-List.
Representative Client Comments:
“Once you have seen the exemplary quality, fallen down the rabbit-hole and experienced the joy of Alexa’s dry wit, it is hard to turn back.” “While not cheap, Alexa is quite fair. Getting it right is a matter of pride and family tradition.” “I am pleased to report that Alexa is quite busy. But this can mean less of her time for the smaller clients.” “A lot of fun, and each interior is better than the last.” “I have been in the real estate development business for over 30 years, and I have not seen anyone with the project management skills Alexa has brought to the table.” “Walking through the D&D with Alexa is like being with royalty, everyone rushes to her side.” “Alexa has a unique eye. We will go through 200 samples at the D&D and she will know exactly which blue will work. It is amazing.”
