FR Review:
Philip Gorrivan designs with an eye toward the future and a nod to the past. While the components may sometimes include period antiques and vintage pieces, the result is always tailored and often layered: symmetrical arrangements, open space and the careful balance of color. Clients praise Gorrivan’s ability to liven up a room inexpensively, saying that he adds glamour with just a coat of gloss paint or with one well-chosen piece. When the project is more extensive, Gorrivan works with clients to create spaces that are “tailored and comfortable” but “full of the unexpected.” The outcome is Park Avenue panache for the younger, more eclectic crowd.
Before opening this boutique firm in 2001, Gorrivan spent time in the publishing world, as a part-time art dealer, and in venture capital at JP Morgan. References say that Gorrivan takes on a small number of projects each year. Recently he opened up a London office to tackle projects across the pond, though significant work is still done in Manhattan. Clients, who tend to be young families, say that Gorrivan is “lovely” and “easy to work with,” and that calls were returned quickly. The firm charges a reasonable upfront design fee and a standard markup over wholesale. Living rooms are generally in the $75,000 range. Recent fabric lines through Highland Court have been received well. Gorrivan’s press profile and pool of happy clients continues to grow.
Representative Client Comments:
“Philip took some of my mother’s mid-century chairs and painted them black to update them. It was the perfect mix of something old and something new.” “More inclined toward interesting mixtures than straight traditional or straight modern.” “They’re definitely there for me. I say it once and it’s done.” “They introduced me to a contractor I just loved.” “I wouldn’t hesitate to use Philip again.” “I wanted an up-and-coming firm that would take my phone calls and work hard for my business. That’s exactly what I got.” “I’ve had bad. They’re really good.”
