Shelly Handman is recognized for his clean, transitional, comfortable designs and professional attitude. Clients also credit Handman for his excellent space planning and considerable flair without embellishment. Meeting a balance between sophisticated styling and relaxed family lifestyles, he has a strong preference for a "less is more"contemporary blueprint with allowances for over-sized, well-stuffed upholstery. Handman is said to be adamant that the furnishings enhance and complement the existing architecture, urging clients to "fulfill their interiors' potential."
After studying art history undergrad and design at the Harrington Institute, Handman worked with Arlene Semel, for eight years, leaving as director of design. He then established his own firm in 1987. There are seven people on staff, which is said to be very strong. Clients state that Handman is part of every design decision and that he is very approachable, accessible and client-service oriented. Projects are generally on the North Shore and the Gold Coast, with commissions further afield (Florida, California, Israel).
The firm charges no hourly rate for interior design work and retail prices on furnishings. For construction oversight, there is an hourly fee. Supporters say Handman is very open and organized about presenting economic design options often offering "Volvo, Saab and Mercedes"alternatives. Living rooms generally fall in the $70,000 to $125,000 range. He is highly recommended for potential clients seeking his soft modern design. ASID.
