FR Review:
A cross between restoration and conservation, Restorvation aptly describes the combination of skills Robin De Groot embodies. He studied conservation with Ralph Kennedy at Kennedy Conservation (see review) and at West Dean College in England. In addition, he spent almost 18 years at Caledonian (see review) before starting his own business four years ago. His training is in English antique furniture repair and conservation, and his techniques include carving, gilding, French polishing, structural and veneer repair and hardware restoration. He also works with Federal American furniture and has recently started to make period-furniture reproductions.
Clients appreciate De Groot's strong sense of personal service and complete involvement in a project, from the initial consultation to the written proposal with photographs to the final delivery, which he does himself in order to explain what's been done and provide tips on maintenance. The bulk of his work is with private clients in the city and northern suburbs. Almost all of work is done in his studio. Estimates are free and pricing is based on the demands of each job.
