FR Review:
A pioneer in modern progressive design, Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects continues to employ new technologies in glass and metal to visually eliminate the building's envelope, fusing the indoor spaces to the contiguous gardens, courtyards and landscapes. The firm’s palette of natural colors, materials and textures contributes to this contextual unification. Known for “multicultural modernism,” the firm’s work reflects a joining of African and Asian influences with the modern masters who have influenced founding partner Steven Ehrlich—Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, to name a few. Each project builds upon the last, with clear design objectives in mind.

After graduating from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1969, Ehrlich spent six years in Africa serving as the first architect with the Peace Corps in Marrakesh, Morocco. He founded the firm in 1979; it has since grown to 35 employees with three more partners—Takashi Yanai, Patricia Rhee and Mathew Chaney. Clients say all four principals are a "true force throughout the project," supported by a "terrifically organized" staff to run with the day-to-day details.

Before starting any design plan, clients are asked to complete a twelve-page questionnaire that covers lifestyle issues as well as personal needs and preferences. Although the planning process may be long (typically one year), clients say the firm's thoroughness makes for very few work order changes and no surprises. The firm balances its institutional and commercial efforts with residential projects that are primarily ground-up, 5,000 to 15,000 square foot structures.

Representative Client Comments:
"Great creativity but always a rationale behind their thoughts." "Steven is clear, reasonable and very articulate. He has an exciting and specific point of view that is engaged in finding that next level of modernist ideal." "Only will use the finest materials, which can put a dent in the budget." "Excellent collaborator, making it work for the client's lifestyle." "So helpful when working out change orders. Usually the bane of every project, but so well handled here." "Designers are always readily accessible, each with a great eye for detail." "The result is spectacular. The neighbors come over all the time to admire it."
