FR Review:
This sociable architect has become the darling of art world aficionados and Hollywood heavyweights by creating some of the most noted public spaces in the country, including MoMA QNS in Long Island City, New York and UCLA's Hammer Museum. Michael Maltzan twists sleek, white surfaces into abstract modernist spaces that look "reconfigured by the forces of time." The firm brings the same public consciousness to its residential work as its institutional commissions, remaining as sensitive to how the architecture relates to the community as to how it works for the client. Maltzan's depth of experience with lighting and curatorial issues attracts patrons with significant art collections.
Maltzan received his undergraduate degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and later attended Harvard Graduate School of Design. After a seven-year stint working for Frank Gehry, where he helped prepare the winning submission for the Disney Concert Hall competition, Maltzan started his own studio in Silver Lake. Today, Michael Maltzan prides himself on having a full-service architectural firm reaching the arts, performing arts, institutional, educational, commercial and residential facilities. The practice has won numerous accolades, including awards from the American Institute of Architects and Progressive Architecture. AD100.
