FR Review:
Awash in charm and elegance, the rooms of designer Kate Stamps and her architect husband, Odom, enchant clients with their imaginative concepts, genteel design approach, and can-do attitude. Homes are created to look as if they could have evolved naturally, full of generational personality and covered in lush oleander, bougainvillea, and wisteria. While the Stamps often emphasize the Mediterranean with an Andalusian overlay, other styles are done equally well. Whether it be formal Brentwood neoclassical, a relaxed Malibu cottage, or a take on Turkish yali, rooms are created with traditional bones, quirky treasures, and memories.

Kate and Odom met at Tulane, where she majored in English and art history, and he in architecture. Before opening their joint partnership in 1991, Odom worked in commercial architecture with Johnson Fain Partners for several years. Currently they have fourteen on staff, including six architects and draftsmen, and they take on about ten substantial projects at a time. Clients have included Ellen DeGeneres, Ron Underwood, Geena Davis, and Mrs. Frank Zappa. Commissions go anywhere from 3,500 to 35,000 square foot homes. No matter how big or small the project may be, the Stamps ask the client to fill out a 50-page questionnaire that quantifies everything from their plate diameters to the way they fold their underwear.

The firm favors taking on all three aspects of home design: the architecture, interiors, and gardens to create a coherent structure. Clients often bring the two Stamps on as a team, and Odom also does a fair amount of architecture independently. Several yearly shopping trips across the United States and Europe yield the most interesting and well-priced pieces. Living rooms and product range widely with fabrics falling anywhere from $5 to $300 per yard. Standard architecture, design, and product fees on all purchases are taken.

Representative Client Comments:
"While we had a strong sense of what we wanted, Stamps really took the time to understand." "Odom integrated seamless extensions of the existing property." "I started at Laura Ashley and Kate took us way beyond." "The architectural aesthetic can sometimes take precedence over function." "The Stamps take a vested interest in their work and create an emotional response. It is way more than just a job for them." "There is no such thing as ‘off duty' with the Stamps." "There is much attention to detail and, thankfully, not much to fashion." "It is an ongoing process with Kate. She encourages you to wait until you find the perfect piece." "When they work together they're wonderful—unified flow and vision." "They can visualize what you want from a little swatch and make it happen."
