This ideas-based firm creates "powerful architecture" in an international modern aesthetic. Clients praise principal Andrew Liang for an intellectually minimalist design that maximizes budget. LAB+ also exhibits an admirable consciousness of "green" issues, incorporating radiant floor heating, natural ventilation systems and alternative power sources whenever possible. The firm's built-in millwork accents its structures with details of exceptional quality. Further, clients say Liang and Wen provide "excellent representation for the client" to contractors and persevere to get things done properly.
Andrew Liang trained with quite a list of firms, including SOM, Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster and Richard Keating. The small practice of five has been in business since 1997 and about half the commissions are residential.
LAB+ works mainly in the Malibu and Hollywood Hills areas, as well as elsewhere along the coastline, completing ground-up single-family homes and occasional remodel projects. These need not be large, but they are ambitious in scope. One of the recently completed projects is a 4,500 square foot modern home on a hilltop site in Agoura Hills complete with a temperature-controlled, thirteen-car, 3,500 square foot garage. Satisfied clients say this firm can forge a spectacular design from a very tight budget.
