Melinda Gray brings her iconoclastic nature to modern architecture that is definitely not your standard black and white. Gray's work is admired by her clients for its "sculptural feel" that is enhanced by experimentation with exposed materials, such as logs and steel I-beams. Sources say that Gray will contribute her creative matter to every aspect of every project—right down to the hardware, light fixtures, cabinetry and furniture.
Gray's "strength of perspective" and "tremendous patience" are seen as real assets in "getting the job done." She is the sole principal of this small firm, which she founded in 1984 after getting a graduate degree in architecture from UCLA and working at the revered firms of Eric Owen Moss and Frank Israel.
This firm's five to ten projects a year are predominantly residential and can be seen in seaside Santa Monica or on the tricky hillside and landslide-prone sites of Malibu. We're told Gray takes on single-room renovations to new 8,000 square foot homes. Working in the $300+ per square foot range is not uncommon for Gray, making her work a very good value for clients who share her viewpoint.
