FR Review:
With strength of character and sophistication beyond their years, Alexandra and Michael Misczynski have already completed commissions for some of the biggest names in town. Bridging the traditional and contemporary, Atelier AM has that undefinable magic that sublimely suffuses a room. Restraint is a critical factor—both in the calming, neutral palettes and the highly edited number of pieces that grace a room. Enthusiastically recommended by clients and peers alike, Atelier AM looks to be one of the great up-and-coming firms in LA design.
It's apparent from their impeccable work that this husband-and-wife team trained with the best. Alexandra graduated from Hamilton College in fine arts and then worked with Naomi Leff for four years and Michael Smith for three. Michael graduated from USC in architecture and then trained with Rose Tarlow for two years and Richard Meier for three. Their firm, established in 2000, has a few on staff and takes on about five projects at a time (recently, Michael Eisner and Eli Broad). The principals are intimately involved in every design decision while the firm is developing its distinct imprint.
Antiques are important to the look and the process of creating rooms with a finely honed patina. Budgets can be set up front or evolve, but they are commensurate with Atelier's high quality. The firm's flat fee is set up-front based on scope. Thus, the finest antiques or (rarely) Crate & Barrel may be used, with no differentiation in design fee. Clients remark that great care and attention are lavished on the project, with extraordinary results. AD100 2012, 2014. AD100 2018, 2019.
Representative Client Comments:
"Each item is stunning in its own right and then looks impeccable in its chosen location." "They are clear in their own design focus and simultaneously clear as to who the client is." "They are totally in control of the process and the subs—when they say a fixture will be here by 9 AM, you can bet on it." "Incredibly responsive." "We had an architect of necessity, but hired Alex and Michael for their taste." "Consistent in look and in deed." "They both look like they could be in the movies, but have no attitude." "Expensive, with a strong preference for antiques, but the pieces do not have to be the highest end. They are not snobs about it." "They are dedicated to details: doorknobs, little accessories. All the things you take for granted, but actually transform the look." "Catch them while you can."
