FR Review:
Serving select retail customers and mostly the trade, Anthony Kafesjian is a well-known and well-loved character in the industry. Deeply rooted in the eighteenth century, Anthony uses only "real" carbon paper for orders and only recently added a computer and fax machine to the office. Not quite a Luddite, but his love for Old-World traditions is reflected in the exceptional quality of his upholstery work and custom built furniture.
Kafesjian's father, Lloyd, learned the trade from fellow upholsters while living in Chicago. Opening the family firm in the Windy City in 1933, Lloyd moved the business to LA in 1969. Today, the firm has twenty employees. Anthony, a math major with a B.S. from UCLA (did he use an abacus?) is said to bring an outstanding sense of proportion to the firm's painstaking work. Adding to the quality of work is the presence of apprentice Lex Lee, who has degrees in economics and interior design from UCLA and FIDM, respectively, and is responsible for most of the construction drawings as well as the full size drawings that are often presented to clients for approval.
Before any commissions are accepted, a face-to-face is required and the estimate is sent via e-mail. As an extra precaution, all complicated pieces are tested in muslin on site. Work is delivered in six to eight weeks. This distinguished firm also charges distinguished prices well above standard. Decorators tend to use the firm for their client's very best pieces, but not for the kids' rooms. Having worked with Kafesjian for over thirty years, many customers feel a deep loyalty to the firm and enjoy periodically stepping back in time to visit it.
Representative Client Comments:
"The style is similar to George Smith, but much better." "Anthony makes sure everything is perfect and comfortable to him. This means a lot since he is 6'6" tall." "The quality is amazing, but Anthony likes to do it his way." "An established master of the craft."
