FR Review:
Tim Nicol built his excellent reputation working with neighbors in Laguna Beach to give their homes a "warm, cottage-like feel." Nowadays Nicol consistently infuses his work with that same familial warmth, on projects that range from a classic contemporary structure to an updated remodel of a traditional home. We're told that clients appreciat his "calm, relaxed nature" and his clear sense of direction.
Nicol grew up in the Bay Area and received an undergraduate degree in architecture from Berkeley. He moved to Southern California in 1991, working for a commercial architecture firm, yet his heart was always in residential. Through his contacts in Laguna, Nicol started doing work for neighbors and today his firm of three still works primarily in that neighborhood. About 30 percent of the work is ground up, with the remaining being additions and remodels, mostly for young professionals with growing families.
New homes are generally in the 3,000 to 5,000 square foot range and are done at $350 to $450 a foot, depending upon the client's preferences. The firm works on an hourly basis or as a percentage of construction, which averages out to be lower than the standard architectural fee.
