FR Review:
Bringing a familiar calm and warmth to each project, Chris Barrett is known for her designs of down-to-earth elegance. There are usually a few well-loved antiques that invite you into the room, complemented by clean lines and soothing textures. Intriguing vintage accents enhance the appeal. Recently, Barrett has worked on a tremendous variety of homes—from a formal yet soothing 18,000 square feet in Bel Air to a homey Cape Cod cottage in Santa Monica to comfortable Spanish glam in Hollywood Hills. She is currently working on the restoration of the 28 cottages of the San Ysidro Ranch, where JFK and Jackie honeymooned.
A former actor, Barrett graduated from UCLA's interior design program and formed her practice in 1984. She now has a group of four working on about three major and several smaller projects at a time. Commissions include the homes of Charlize Theron and Scooby-Doo star Matthew Lillard, as well as the office of Jerry Moss. The back office is noted to be highly efficient. In addition to her residential work, Barrett recently designed a line of tableware and rugs.
Most commissions are of entire homes, but smaller kitchen and bath rejuvenations are often undertaken. Living rooms can be done with exquisite antiques or with product sourced from Pottery Barn, as long as there is a mix of style and provenance. The firm charges a standard design fee and a standard commission. Time and economic benchmarks are set realistically and met, with strong lines of communication throughout the life of the project.
Representative Client Comments:
"While other designers might consider a piece too worn and funky, Chris loves to ground a room with such warmth." "She is constantly on the move, but amazingly effective." "She really valued our perspective." "Chris encouraged us to use forgiving fabrics like linens and chenilles which wore so well over time." "Chris just makes sense to my husband: she is good with Kohler's and Maytag." "I learned to trust Chris's vision." "You have to exercise a certain amount of self-restraint because Chris finds the most wonderful things. But she is always good if you say no." "She is not shy, but quite collaborative." "Chris was always on call and dealt with the architect and contractor very well." "She has a very calming effect on everyone." "We loved everything she did except for one chair, but we did not tell Chris. Somehow she knew and magically had the chair reupholstered while we were on vacation."
