FR Review:
References describe RoTo's work as "masterpieces of intellectual thought"—refined, distilled, "visually exciting and sleek." With a diverse portfolio that includes the planning of rural communities and land use design for natural conservation, RoTo Architects takes on only a select few private residences, treating each one like a teaching case study. The firm's designs tend toward the modern, but always derive their form from the shape and texture of the land. The company enjoys a robust referral business, and we're told clients are impressed with the partners' detailed, collaborative approach and their careful execution of the designs.

Partners Michael Rotondi and Clark Stevens bring almost 40 years of combined experience to this firm of fifteen, founded in 1991. Rotondi is a faculty and board of directors member of SCI-Arc, which he helped found in 1972. He served as director of the institute for a decade, from 1987 to 1997. A founding partner of Morphosis in 1976, Rotondi established RoTo Architects in 1991 with Stevens, who holds a Bachelor Degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Architecture from Harvard.

The firm's institutional work includes Sinte Gleska University in Kyle, South Dakota, the Liberty Wildlife Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Kohala Center in Hawaii. It has also designed a number of private residences and has been chosen as one of 30 internationally known architects to participate in the architectural initiative "The Houses at Sagaponac," in which each selected firm will design a contemporary home in Sagaponac, New York. Homes range from 3,000 to 7,000 square feet and are built for a remarkably low $250 per square foot (but we hear, sell for $600 per square foot). The firm's educational and iterative process results in higher than standard fees.

Representative Client Comments:
"RoTo is a beautiful balance of talent and experience—a pleasure to work with." "Beautiful, interesting, aesthetic space." "They are particular about their work and big on connecting with the client." "Out there, but really good designers. Truly in a unique category." "Part of the cutting edge crowd." "Distilled to the greatest point of simplicity."
