FR Review:
Callas Shortridge wins accolades from clients and peers alike for creating modern structures using rich materials and site-specific cues to complement the landscape in a striking form. Often there are asymmetrical roots, splayed columns and canted walls, but mostly there is a tribute to the light and space they arrange. Principals Barbara Callas and Steven Shortridge have carried the torch passed to them from the inspired design legacy of their friend and partner, the late Frank Israel—but they also ignited their own bright light. We hear the partners' clean, abstract designs are also sensitive to the nuances of livability.
Clients find this small firm of eight "very dedicated" and say the principals personally see each project through. The company has been in business under its current name since 1996. Callas holds a graduate architecture degree from UCLA, while Shortridge's is from MIT. The firm deals primarily with residential commissions, but it does accept an occasional commercial or institutional project.
Callas Shortridge works mainly in the Pacific Palisades, Bel Air, Venice and Beverly Hills areas. However, they have completed projects in London, Las Vegas, Tel Aviv, Canada and Florida. Many of the firm's jobs are "transformative remodeling" projects of both significant and modest size, and these are always highly collaborative with the client. The firm's fees are said to be expensive, but worth an end result that is "the envy of everyone who comes into the house."
Representative Client Comments:
"We wanted to go for the best and we did." "They are both very meticulous and have incredibly good taste, to say the least." "You might have the idea that modern means cold, but what I got was wonderfully warm." "After two years in this house, I like it even better now—they had amazing foresight." "It has spectacular views that are framed in a magnificent way." "We have become good friends."
