FR Review:
Madeline Stuart embraces a distinct design intention that incorporates quiet elegance, a reverence for historic beauty and honest simplicity. The hip and chic mingle easily with the comfortable and the more refined. Fortuny fabrics play against lovingly detailed nineteenth-century custom millwork, which in turn dances with 1940s French Lucite-and-glass chandeliers. While less is more, it's clearly enough to add warmth and character—with a glimmer of what is to come.
Raised in Beverly Hills by a film-director father and an interior-designer mother, Stuart started her business in 1990. Working with a staff of six, Stuart undertakes about five major projects at a time. Many clients are in the entertainment and political world, including Larry David and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham.
While budgets may evolve, Stuart gives the client lots of time and lots of choices. She has been known to sit clients down with armfuls of books and ask them about their preferences. Shopping together is the norm. Standard design fees are charged, with standard product markups or reasonable hourlies, depending on the circumstances of the project. Whether it's designing the right custom-made piece or choosing the perfect antique, Stuart pours her heart into every detail. Her search for perfection on one project sometimes leads her astray from others and may drive the staff to its wits' end, but clients are euphoric about the final results. Stuart's work is frequently featured in leading national design publications, and in 2011 she was awarded inclusion on the prestigious Architectural Digest 100 list. Elle Decor Top 25, 2010, 2011; Ell Decor A-List. AD 100, 2011, 2012, 2014.
