FR Review:
Partners Ron Goldman, Robert Firth and Lino Rossi layer light and space as an expression of the exterior landscape and the client's inner needs. The firm's use of harmonious lines, historically derived courtyards and simple materials gives its work a soft, comfortable feel. Modern in style, its designs possess an uplifting joy that brings a personality to each home. The firm does not draw a line between the inside and the outside of the house and will also take on independent landscaping projects. We're told the principals are "warm and direct" in their dealings with the client, maintaining flexibility and responsiveness.

Goldman is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and studied architecture and planning at Princeton University and MIT; he opened his own firm in 1976. Firth, who holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Arizona State University, joined the firm in 1983. Rossi was added to the mix in 1988; he received a Masters in Architecture from the University of Florence, Italy. On the institutional side, the firm has carved a niche for itself as the designers of choice for religious institutions and private schools, working on such projects as the Hillel Center at UCLA and the Mirman School for Gifted Children in LA.

Located in Malibu, the office has ten employees. Today, about a third of the firm's fifteen active projects are residential and repeat business constitutes over half the docket. Ground-up homes average 6,000 square feet with lower than standard per square foot costs and lower fees either at a fixed cost or capped.

Representative Client Comments:
"They stay true to the design expression—will not mix motifs; but will always develop an appropriate answer for the client that maintains the integrity of the project." "They built on a bluff corner and really took advantage of views and positions of the lot." "Innovative expertise." "They get joy from their work." "Modern minded, but not somber or too serious." "Their strong exposure to institutional projects allows them to find lower-cost yet becoming alternatives, making them very attractive pricewise."
