An avant-garde contractor who has worked with the likes of Frank Gehry and Brian Murphy for the past several decades, Jim Davis has built on beaches and hillsides, constructing projects with reclaimed lumber from North Carolina and handmade hardware from Mexico. He's done ad agencies, loft office spaces, and tenant improvement projects, but his bread and butter is large-scale renovations and new custom homes in the multiple-million-dollar range (with some smaller jobs for existing clients). A popular force in Los Angeles contracting, Davis is known to refer clients to architects as much as architects refer their clients to him.
Davis got his start fashioning hip furniture and interiors for decorators. Nowadays we hear that Davis makes an interesting contractor: he thinks like an architect, walks like a builder and talks straight to clients. Sources say this firm really helps them to assess their needs, grasp detail and design concepts, and keep them comfortable around budget issues. As a result, the firm is often hired early in the process on a consultancy basis, with the fee to be ultimately credited toward the construction contract if Davis gets it—which he always does.
The modest-sized firm takes on only a small number of projects at any one time and dispatches a full-time super to each job site. Davis himself is present at job meetings once a week and is deeply involved with bidding and the shaping of budgets. At his tier, Davis has a slight edge over the competition in terms of costs, since their outsourced trades prove less practical in their pricing structure than his. Clients say Davis puts the money into the project and doesn't cut corners. He takes pride in fomenting long relationships with his clients, for several of whom he has been entrusted to build two to three homes over the course of his career.
