FR Review:
With a distinct 21st-century style described by insiders as "somewhere between minimalist and California funk," this husband-and-wife team has been making waves in LA since 1984. Hodgetts + Fung creates spare and clean designs that feature natural materials, particularly glass, cement and steel. Clients praise this dynamic duo for "thinking outside the box" and listening to a wide range of solutions, "even if an idea is not their own."
Principals Craig Hodgetts, who holds a Master's of Architecture from Yale and Hsin-Ming Fung, who holds a Master's of Architecture from UCLA, lead this firm of sixteen. About 50 percent of Hodgetts + Fung's body of work is residential, with the remainder being exhibition spaces and institutional installations. The firm is also involved in the preservation of the Case Study Houses of the 1950s and 1960s.
Taking on about ten projects per year across the western US, Argentina, Germany, China and Switzerland, the practice works with "moderate" budgets of $1 million and up, but they will work with budgets of less than half of that. Hodgetts + Fung works most often in the city's exclusive neighborhoods, including West Hollywood, Brentwood and Sylmar. The firm's fees are based on a slightly higher-than-standard percentage of overall construction costs.
Representative Client Comments:
"Craig and Ming are constantly looking for a challenge and experimenting, looking to advance their craft. They strongly prefer clients of that mentality." "They play off each other very well as they can have quite different viewpoints, but it comes together beautifully." "Other architects are highly impressed." "Not at all dogmatic (unlike other architects I have known) and very good about budgetary restraints." "They have the ability to design very creatively with inexpensive materials." "Craig and Ming have a knack for designing a functional home with amazing aesthetics. You get the best of both worlds." "Their style is based on the needs of the project and the client, and not on leaving their signature concept."
