FR Review:
Weaving together centuries of European savoir-faire, Penny Bianchi develops dioramas of "life in the country." Her signature style is one of bucolic good breeding, effortlessly linking highbrow with the more relaxed. Influenced by the late twentieth-century British interior designer Nancy Lancaster, Bianchi adds similar whimsical touches. Fine dining chairs may be slipcovered in striped cotton for the summer and large porcelain parrots may stand guard. Clients say they love the Old-World ease of printed fabrics that live cohesively with patterned rugs, often in lush colors.
After reading House In Good Taste, Bianchi put aside her English literature degree and launched a decorating business in the early 1970s. Originally from Pasadena, she formed an excellent reputation in the neighborhood that still resonates today. Her longest and most over-the-top project lasted twelve years when Warren Buffett's right-hand man, Charlie Munger, gave her carte blanche to decorate condos in Montecito. With one assistant, Bianchi now balances several projects at a time mostly in and around Montecito where she lives with husband Adam, who handles the business side of the firm. She is delighted to do one room, as much as she likes to lavish attention on an entire house. Customers are quick to return for new projects, as well as smaller cosmetic tasks.
Bianchi charges a standard up-front design fee and standard product commissions, and there is no hourly fee. Estate sales, flea markets, auctions and eBay items are purchased to keep costs down. We hear clients are very pleased with the experience and the finished product.
