We hear this hip, young architect strives for a synthesis of old and new, coupling cutting-edge design with classic comfort. The firm works expertly in an array of styles and can create anything from a modern Hollywood celebrity bachelor pad with "all the bells and whistles" to a traditional Mediterranean-style estate, often incorporating historical elements into contemporary frameworks. Clients tell us principal Scott Joyce revels in the hi-tech, coming up with such elements as a 30-foot retractable skylight or a glass-backed fireplace. The firm also designs custom-built furniture for architectural clients and offers landscaping services.
Joyce is said to rise to the challenge of developing ideas "outside the box" and to manage each project with a keen strategic style. Clients also appreciate his relaxed, upbeat demeanor. A graduate of SCI-Arc with a Master's in Architecture, he started his firm in 1996 while still a thesis student. He continues to teach at the institution.
Though most work is along the California coast, the firm has been commissioned to design homes in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Sources tell us this small firm takes on no more than ten residential clients per year to focus attention on each project. These are mostly ground-up homes that average 10,000 to 15,000 square feet, as well as the occasional remodel. Price per square foot is reasonable for the high-end work at about $300.
