FR Review:
Classic Design is the kind of place that triggers exclamation points. "The absolute epitome of excellence!" "The industry standard bearer!" And one question mark: "How can they take so long?" Raoul Benassaya, the founder of Classic Design is happy to answer that last point. It's because the firm will only do a job one way—the right way—which to Benassaya means 100 percent hand-sewn, much of it done by his own fingers.

Described by the finest decorators in LA as a true artisan, Benassaya got his start as a fourteen-year-old apprentice in France. Benassaya founded Classic in LA in 1986 and grew the firm into the 25-member, 30,000 square foot establishment it is today. Benassaya's son Julien, who works alongside his father, is the sixth generation of the family to enter the trade. Doing both traditional and contemporary custom work, the firm specializes in the reupholstery and restoration of modern 1950s and 1960s Knoll and Herman Miller pieces. The firm is equally adept at providing antique restoration, custom beds, slipcovers and leather working. The firm's extraordinary reputation has earned it some plum commercial commissions. For the J.P. Getty Center Galleries, Classic was called upon to make 190 chairs and all the benches in collaboration with Richard Meier, and to create the gallery's wall upholstery with Thierry Despont.

Many of Classic's custom designs are said to have an East Coast sensibility, "equaling the quality of the highest caliber guys in New York, at about two-thirds the cost." While the stated delivery time is eight weeks, no item this fine is released before its time.

Representative Client Comments:
"If I can afford the time and the cost for the client, they are definitely my first choice." "A minimum of twelve weeks, sometimes many, many months, but totally worth it." "He will interview you, not the other way around." "Before they will start on a restoration, weeks of research is done in the library." "No stitch is visible." "You have to go down there to make sure Raoul is working on your piece and no one else's." "Not to be taken lightly. Serious quality at a serious price."
