Maintaining a classical European-American tradition while inviting the charm of modern interplay, Mark Cutler offers an updated take on the expected. With the greatest respect for historical lines, Cutler takes a space and molds the concept to create a personalized portrait of the client. This translates into a modern take on traditional or a "soft and warm" take on modern, depending on the client's preferences. Distressed woods may be used to create a more formal cadence, or modern fittings may be used in a farmhouse to create balance. In all cases, Cutler has won the confidence of his clients, who consistently compliment his professional and personal skills.
Raised in Australia, Cutler received a degree in architecture at the University of Queensland. Starting his career in New York, he was soon lured to LA. Working under the tutelage of Bill Hablinski in the interiors department for nine years, Cutler struck out on his own in 2000. Now with his own very competent team of six, Cutler takes on about six major commissions a year. While several projects are quite substantial, including a house for Tom Skerritt, the budgets can be quite moderate. The firm is also willing to take on smaller projects, and has had great success with excellent kitchen and bath rejuvenations. Most commissions are on the west side, in Orange County or the Montecito/Santa Barbara area.
Clients and contractors credit Cutler for his comprehensive CAD floor plans, which detail every item. The company is also commended for "value engineering" budgets and its reasonable, businesslike approach. Standard design fees are taken up front with standard product fees taken on purchases. There are fairly regular shopping hunts across Europe to find unexpected, well-priced alternatives.
