Some families hand down a love of cooking, others pass on a talent for sports. Charles Poer's family was partial to the genteel art of painted antique finishes. Poer learned the skill from his father, who in turn had learned it from his sister 40 years earlier. Today, Poer is respected by the city's decorators and architects for his 22-karat gold and chinoiserie finishes and his 30-plus years of expertise in antique reproductions.
Applying finishes to new furniture makes up about 90 percent of Poer's business, and he's able to take on jobs involving anything from a single piece to 50 pieces. Sources say Poer is also known to do architectural finishes for entire rooms, such as kitchens and libraries. Poer usually works on two to three estates each year, filling his time in between projects with numerous showroom commissions.
We hear that Poer "prices things to get jobs" and is flexible in his estimates. Many of his clients tend to be from Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Aspen and San Francisco. He's been published in Architectural Digest and has worked on pieces for television and movie sets, including Dallas and the Father of the Bride movies, as well as the soda fountain sculpture in the Disney Store of Hollywood.
