FR Review:
Known in architectural circles as a pioneer in the current wave of rediscovered Classicism, Allan Greenberg was building grand shingle-style homes well before they became the must-have 80's accessory in the Hamptons. An ardent defender of all things classical, Greenberg's firm is often hired by government agencies to build statuesque structures that will stand the test of time. Recent projects include a Connecticut Superior Courthouse, the Luxembourg Embassy in DC and the Treaty Ceremony Room at the US State Department. Prestigious commercial institutions also value the illustrious look that Greenberg achieves. Commissions include Turnbull & Asser's US Headquarters, Tommy Hilfiger's Beverly Hills Flagship, Bergdorf Goodman's facade renovation and the D&D Building's snazzy new neo-classical lobby.
This strong proclivity for the eminent and classical translates very well to the residential market—assuming the client is of the mindset to fund the very best. About eight residential projects are taken on at a time and are evenly split between large-scale renovations and new-home construction. In addition to substantial apartments and sprawling classical estates, Greenberg enjoys working on traditional farms, stables, greenhouses and barns. Greenberg and his staff will take on projects with budgets ranging from $500,000 to $20 million, all of which are richly detailed.
A South African native, Greenberg received his M.Arch from Yale and has taught at Yale, U. Penn and Columbia. He established the firm of 25 in 1960 and remains the sole principal. There are offices in Washington DC, New York and Greenwich. Fifty-plus years in the business put his discriminating clients at ease; we hear he has a rational and very thorough process "that's as tight as a drum." The firm charges a higher fee based on hourly costs or a percentage of overall construction costs. AD 2010, 2012, 2014.
Representative Client Comments:
"The most serious Classical architect of our generation." "He understands exactly why the greatest architecture of Greece and Rome has stood the test of time." "Brought Classicism back to respectability with dignity--and he was doing this 30 years ago." "His designs lift the spirit." "They not only get the architecture perfectly, but also manage the entire process so well: interior design, construction management, post-construction services." "We were a very small client for Allan. He clearly was not there for the day-to-day, but was involved enough to know what was going on to a detail level. And the overall professionalism of the firm was excellent."
