FR Review:
Daring and captivating, Kelly Wearstler is cutting a sparkling path through the Los Angeles design community. Feminine, glamorous and alluring, her designs felicitously integrate Lucite, Murano glass, mirrorized surfaces and traditional English furniture and fittings. She is best known for updating the Avalon and Maison 140 in Beverly Hills, the Estrella in Palm Springs and the oceanfront Viceroy in Santa Monica. Wearstler brings this same fusion of noble past and present allure to her residential work, which constitutes about half of her practice.
Born in South Carolina and raised by an interior-designer mother, Wearstler studied graphic arts and architecture. She then apprenticed with the luminary Milton Glaser at Pushpin Studios and worked on movie sets before forming an interior design practice in 1995. Wearstler currently works on about ten residential projects per year and receives project requests from all over the world. The back office is noted to be very organized in keeping with the demands of the commercial process. The title of her book, Unexpected Style: Designing and Decorating with Drama, speaks for itself.
Happily mixing flea-market finds with the very best antiques, Wearstler stretches the evolving budget without compromising the look: Louis XIV lives happily next to high-styled Italian and 1960s mod finds. The firm starts with a retainer applicable against hourly design fees (or scheduled as flat) and charges standard product commissions. Many clients are repeat customers.
