FR Review:
Clients say this architectural team "harkens back to historical architecture with traditional shapes and details," yet creates homes that are "perfectly suitable for modern living." With open floor plans, liberal inclusion of glass and an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living, clients claim a Shope Reno Wharton design "is the best of both worlds." While sources tell us "the client dictates the style of the house," it is safe to say Shope Reno Wharton is best known for its fluency in traditional vocabulary and distinct interpretations of American Shingle style. Clients laud the architects of this firm for being able to "capture the spirit of the land and translate that into the spirit of the house." The firm's principals see the design and construction process as a "a symphony between the architect, builder and client." Despite their industry acclaim for being some of the finest architects in the country, clients tell us "you still get the partners and you get the team--there's no individualism."

Principals of this firm, which was founded in 1981, are Allan P. Shope, Bernard M. Wharton, Arthur Hanlon and Jerry Hupy. The firm generally accepts about a dozen new residential projects each year. All of these are ground-up residences that carry major budgets of up to $20 million--and averaging $2.5 million to $5 million. The firm has left its mark on waterfront homes and is said to approach such sites "with vigor and creative solutions." We're told a Shope Reno Wharton home has "a sense of permanence" with regard to fitting into and aging with its surroundings. Shope Reno Wharton also designs golf clubhouses, academic buildings and museum spaces.

Potential clients are strongly advised to be familiar with the firm's work and realize that Shop Reno Wharton is highly selective of its projects, regardless of budget. In fact, sources say the "perfect client" for the firm is one who "is highly involved, curious and full of ideas." While half of the firm's commissions take place in and around Greenwich, Darien and Scarsdale, this national firm has worked in 40 states from Florida to Wyoming. The firm charges a standard percentage of construction costs, however, it must be noted that its projects carry much larger budgets than a typical home. AD 100, 2000, 2002, 2004.
